One of our most treasured family traditions is our annual visit to Cole Palen's Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in New York's Hudson Valley. In all our travels, we've never come across anything remotely similar. If you love planes, the history of flight, a fun, family-friendly afternoon, and/or feeling like you've stepped back in time, it's definitely worth a trip!

The Aerodrome operates air shows from mid-June through mid-October. We've gone all throughout the season, and it's a treat every time. It is worth noting, however, that the show will be cancelled if the wind is too strong or if there's rain, so if possible, give the weather a check before booking your show.

Nestled in the woods just past Rhinebeck, the Aerodrome is a magical step back in time. In addition to the museum, which lets you walk through eras of flight history from the Wright Brothers through WWII, there are biplane rides and two different air shows -- history of flight and a WWI dog fight spectacular. The air shows are both wonderful, although we find the WWI option to be the most fun, with a full narrative arc featuring a villain, a hero, and lots of comedy along the way.

Tickets, which include an air show and museum entrance (biplane rides are separate), are $16-35 and can be purchased online or at the gate. We always buy ahead as we plan our whole day around the excursion. Concessions include popcorn, soda, hot dogs, and the like. There's also a lovely gift shop on site with plane replicas, t-shirts, and flight-themed toys.

After the Aerodrome, head into the charming village of Rhinebeck for a stroll and a bite to eat. Favorite restaurants include Terrapin, The Tavern at the Beekman Arms, and The Amsterdam. A stop at Samuel's Sweet Shop is also essential. They have just about every candy you could hope for, along with great espresso drinks. Paul Rudd is one of the owners, which makes it even cooler.

If time allows, take a ramble through Poet's Walk in Red Hook, 10 minutes from Rhinebeck. Poet's Walk offers a peaceful stroll through bucolic meadows on the banks of the Hudson. There are benches with great views here too, if you're inclined to spend some time reading or writing in nature. Washington Irving was said to have come up with the idea for Rip Van Winkle while walking here. The park is free and open year round.

Happy adventuring!
